Its been a great term...

I just wanted to thank everyone who helped me during my 2 year term as President for the Alum Association. I am happy to announce that the torch is being passed onto Amy Pennington effective immediately. Please welcome her into her new position and show all the support you can for the Alum Association.

If there is anything I can ask of each of you for Amy Pennington's term, it would be to make a committment to become more involved in the Association. I know we are all busy with life, but I personally feel great after having left a meeting and gotten to reconnect with people I maybe don't see on a daily basis. Just consider it atleast....

Thanks soo much to everyone again and I look forward to seeing you all in 2008. I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year.

Loyally,
Amy Barton

Operation Christmas Child

Operation Christmas Child was started in 1993 as a way to spread the "good news of God's love" to children in need all over the world. In a tightly packed shoe box filled with school supplies, candy and toys , a child learns that someone in the world cares and it also about the power of God's love.

This year, Amy Pennington is hosting a get-together at her home on Thursday, November 15th at 7:30pm to prepare shoe boxes to be shipped to children all over the world. She will be serving desserts and coffee so please come with a sweet tooth.

To prepare yourself for this event, you will need the following:

  • Choose the age/sex of your child: Boy (1) 2-4 years (2) 5-9 years (3) 10-14 years OR Girl (1) 2-4 years (2) 5-9 years (3) 10-14 years .
  • Once you have chosen your sex/age, purchase items to fill your shoe box FULL! Suggestions: school supplies (crayons, pencils, markers, stamps, calculator, coloring books), small toys (cars, balls, dolls, stuffed animals, jump ropes, yo-yo), hygiene items (AMY IS PROVIDING TOOTHBRUSHES & TOOTHPASTE, comb, washcloth, soap), other items (hard candy, gum, mints socks, t-shirt, hat, toy jewelry, watch, flashlight - w/ extra batteries, sunglasses).
  • DO NOT PURCHASE: any war-related toy, chocalate, liquids or lotions, anything breakable - like glass and aerosol cans.
  • Bring your shoebox and items to Amy's where you will assemble everything, put in a note (already prepared by Amy) and wrap your gift (wrapping furnished by Amy too).
  • Bring $7 to cover the cost of shipping your shoebox. Checks should be made payable to: Samaritan's Purse and in the memo line write "Operation Christmas Child."

Click HERE for a map to Amy's house. She lives off of West Palmetto Street (toward Timmonsville) in Forest Lake Pointe. If you need further directions, please call Amy at 773-9392.

All,

The Alum Association has taken on the challenge of raising $1,500 in the American Heart Association's Heart Walk. The walk will be held on Saturday, October 27th at Francis Marion University and begins at 10am. The walk is approximately 3 miles long. If you are interested in donating to the cause through the Alum Association, please do so here: ADPi PD Alum. The minimum donation is $25.00. If you prefer to give less, please send a check payble to the AHA to:

All donations are tax-deductible.

Also, if you know of a business that would like to sponsor the cause, please click on the link here. This is a wonderful advertising tool for any business as the markers are placed all along the 3 mile walk. (And trust me, people do notice who sponsors).

Prayer Request

Please keep Anna Pitts and Rachel Turner in your thoughts as their Grandmother passed away this week. As many of you know, both Anna and Rachel were very close to their Grandmother. Please say an extra prayer for their family.

Recruitment Update

Hi Ladies,

First of all let me say thank you to all of you who have volunteered to help out with Zeta Phi recruitment. As some of you may have heard, the number of girls signing up to go through formal recruitment this year was rather low. As of right now there are 25. In response to this, FMU has decided to alter the recruitment plans. The original plan was to have a party on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and then Bid Day on Saturday. The party on Thursday has been eliminated, but the rest will go on as planned with some minor adjustments.

Wednesday night will be composed of 3 rounds lasting 30 minutes each. The girls will be decorating, serving food and wearing the blue dresses originally intended for Pref. The parties for Wednesday begin at 6:15 in room 220 in the UC, so we are asking that if you want to help on that night that you arrive at 6. Friday night will be Philanthropy night. It will be held in room 218 of the UC beginning at 6. If you can help on Friday please try to be there no later than 5:45. Bid matching will occur immediately following the last party.

Again, thank you so much for your willingness to help. Please call me if you have questions, concerns, or suggestions!

Loyally,
Kristy Padgett

Alum Meeting Update 9/4/2007

We had a few new faces tonight that I wanted to take a moment to thank for coming and being a part of our newly revamped Alum Association:

- Patricia Dudley Siegal
- RoseMary Parham
- Kathy Elmore

It is always a thrill when new people come into our Association with fresh ideas. Thanks again all for coming. We hope to see you again soon.

ITEMS THAT WERE DISCUSSED:
  • Jane Gaskins talked about the Pee Dee Alumnae Association newsletter that was mailed out last week. It is something that we are going to do annually (in print) and quarterly by email. Please be on the lookout for that. Thank you again to Jane for taking it on and mailing out all of the newsletters. If you did not receive a newsletter, please send an email to pdadpi@gmail.com to update your address information. Also, a copy of the newsletter will be posted on the website shortly in case you did not receive one.
  • Recruitment is next week!! If you plan to attend ANY night, you MUST email Sarah Foster at slfoster@bellsouth.net so that your name can be added to the list that is given to Francis Marion. Only those listed are allowed to attend recruitment. The dates for recruitment are as follows: DROP IN: Wed, 9/12 6:30-9:30pm, PHILANTHROPY: Thurs, 9/13 7:00-10:30pm, PREFERENCE: 9/14 7:30-10:00pm. If you are interested in learning a bit more about each night, please click on the link to take you to the Francis Marion "GO GREEK" page.
  • The Alumnae Association will be participating in the American Heart Association Heart Walk this year on October 27th at Francis Marion University. Jane Gaskins has volunteered to be our team captain and will be sending out emails updating us on it shortly. For more information on the Pee Dee Heart Walk, click on the link.
  • Bake Sale: The Zeta Phi chapter will be having two (2) bake sales this semester to help raise money for the Florence Area Humane Society. Since October is "Love Animals Month," their first bake sale will be on October 2nd. We have decided that we would like to help the chapter by baking some extra goodies to sell. We plan to meet before the bake sell to wrap up goodies, finish baking goodies, or to just decorate the goodies for the girls to pick up and take to the bake sale. More information on this to follow. Please check the website for details.
  • Jewel Degree will be hosted at the home of Jane Gaskins on Sunday, October 7th at 3pm. If you have NOT been through Jewel Degree, please come dressed in pin attire (and wearing your pin if you have it) at 3pm. For those of you that have been through and plan to attend, please be there at 2:30pm. We will be mailing out invitations so watch your mailbox. Angie Branton has volunteered to handle the invitations and Amy Pennington will be assisting Jane with Jewel Degree. I, Amy Barton, will be officiating the Jewel Degree ceremony. Thanks ladies!
  • RoseMary Parham and Kathy Elmore have an idea to possibly do a tea for local Alumnae to in an effort to raise money for the Zeta Phi chapter. This is an idea in the works so please be on the lookout for updates. Thanks again for the wonderful ideas!!
  • Finally, if you have not paid your annual dues of $25, please do so either through paypal (www.paypal.com) and pay the email address of pdadpi@gmail.com or you can mail your check to Pee Dee ADPi, 412 S. Burris Road #14, Florence, SC 29501.

BABY NEWS!!

I wanted to congratulate Angie (McKnight) Branton and Frank Branton on their recent good news! Angie is pregnant!! I'm sure that we will all be saying our prayers that it is a healthy baby!!

If you would like to personally congratulate Angie, her email is abranton@taylordata.com.

Spirit Week = FUN at FMU!!

Howdy!

My name is Crystal Hill and I am currently serving as the Faculty Advisor for the Zeta Phi chapter at Francis Marion University. As the summer comes to a close, it is my job to make sure Spirit Week 2007 is ready to go. This is the week before recruitment, which allows our chapter to prepare as a whole for the upcoming formal recruitment.

It is my pleasure to be the Faculty Advisor and help plan an exciting week for girls that is not only filled with work but also fun and excitement and to also help keep spirit and morale high when times could get very stressful. This year the spirit week will take on a whole new look. Filled with "Dress Up" days which include Superhero day, Polo and pearls, Red Carpet Day, Nerd day and a few more; also days will include a few fun icebreakers and activities to give the girls a break from all of their hard work. Slide shows and music will be playing at the beginning of each recruitment workshop to get the energy flowing and running high, the slide shows will show pictures from the day before of girls working hard and bonding with their sisters.

I would like to reward all the girls who come to spirit week ready to work but also ready to play. Categories for prizes to be given out in include Best Dressed for each Pledge Class, Overall Best Dressed, Most Spirited, Hardest Working and Most original costume. I would like these prizes to be well worth the effort, however money comes in a short supply when it comes to spirit week.

Some of the prizes include…

- iTunes Gift cards
- Nail Gift cards
- Gift Cards to the local Movie Theaters
- Alpha Delta Pi Blanket
- Francis Marion University Blanket
- Starbucks Gift Cards

These are some of the big prizes that I would really enjoy giving to girls who work hard and play hard during spirit week. Playing hard during spirit week is just as important as working hard; the dressing up is what makes spirit week out of the ordinary and different from all other recruitment days. Spirit week is important to preparing for the formal recruitment process and I am so excited for it to get underway; I am also very excited to make this spirit week unlike one ever experienced before. Any help is greatly appreciated thank you so much for your time.

Loyally,

Crystal R. Hill, Ph.D.
